Summer vacation is just around the corner and the weather is warming up for spring. Before it comes time to lounge around the backyard with a cool drink and a good book, you might be thinking about using these few months of spring to get some projects done around the house. However, there are some projects that should never be done without a professional’s help:
Home additions. While taking walls down might seem like a simple and even fun task, putting them back up can be a challenge. Not to mention that some of those walls might have electrical wiring inside of them or gas pipes, both can cause serious injury and major problems for your house if damaged.
Paving the driveway. Paving stones or rocks can make a flat concrete driveway look more textured and add curb appeal to your home. While these seem like they would be fairly easy to install, they are actually quite involved as the measuring and position has to be precise and is very time consuming.
Electrical work. Any time that a project involves electricity in or around your home you should consult a professional. Electricity is something that we interact with every day in our homes and we completely take it for granted. In fact, thousands of electrical fires are caused each year by improperly installed electrical wiring done by a homeowner. Play it safe and call a professional.
Plumbing work. There are some simple plumbing repairs that most homeowners know how to do. Clogs and new fixtures are fairly simple to projects that can be guided using plans or recommendations from the internet. However, things like leaks or bad smells should always be investigated by a professional. These are problems that could easily escalate to major breakdowns if left unchecked.
Roof work. The roof on your house is essential to protecting the structure from damage due to weather and debris. It is extremely risky to be walking around on your roof if you are not an experienced roofer. It is easily to loose footing and slip and fall. Also, if you don’t know how to repair or install roof shingles you could leave your home vulnerable to more damage than you were trying to repair.
Home improvement projects are fun and leave you with a feeling of pride and satisfaction. However, some are either dangerous to do on your own or, more complicated than they are worth and all of the fun is taken out of the process. If you have any of the above projects on your list this spring – leave them to a professional.
